Recreational Soccer Frequently Asked Questions
Posted May 17, 2011

SCORE volunteers are happy to answer any and all questions about SCORE fall recreational soccer, but we very much appreciate you consulting this FAQ page first to see if your question can be answered without contacting us directly.  If your question is not answered below, feel free to contact any of the SCORE board members for help.

Question: How much does it cost to register my child to play for SCORE?

Answer: The cost is $75 for age groups U5 - U10; $120 for age groups U11 -U18.  After early registration is over on August 1st, the registration fee increases by $10 for both age groups.

Question: What type of equipment does my child need to play soccer?

Answer: A uniform shirt will be provided by SCORE soccer club, or a team decision may require your player purchase a uniform. Players must supply their own soccer shoes, shin guards, and soccer ball. The appropriate ball sizes are:

U-6 to U-8 players need a size 3 ball

U-9 to U12 players need a size 4 ball

U-13 and up players need a size 5 ball

*Yes, it really does matter that your child practice with the right size ball!

Question: When does the Fall Recreational 2014-15 season begin?

Answer: Practices may begin as early as mid-August. The decision of when to start practice is made by your player's assigned coach. Please keep in mind that August is a time when many people take vacations, so some teams may begin practice earlier than others.  The fall season starts with an association-wide jamboree for all MOD teams, U5 through U10, which is scheduled for the first Saturday after Labor Day.  The first regular season games are held on the Saturday following the jamboree.  For the 2014-15 season, these dates are September 6th for the jamboree and September 13th for the first games of the fall regular season.

Question: How will I know who my child's coach is and when practices begin?

Answer: Coaches packets and rosters will be handed out to coaches the second or third week of August. Coaches will contact their players and inform them of practice times and locations. As mentioned above, August is a prime time for vacations and some coaches will start practice a little later than others for this reason. Please allow time for the coach to contact you. We receive many calls during this time of year with parents checking on who their coach is - this creates a great deal of work for our volunteer staff.  We appreciate your patience!

Question: Where are the games and practices held?

Answer: Practices for all age groups are held at various fields within the SCORE boundaries. Games will be played within the Greater Renton Junior Soccer Association boundaries and team opponents will be from SCORE, Cascade, Highlands and Tukwila/Skyway soccer clubs. To find out more about field locations and how to get there, select the "Fields" button on our home page.

Question: When are the games played?

Answer: Games are generally played on Saturdays (U5 - U19). Recreational teams will start the second Saturday after Labor Day weekend, with an association-wide jamboree held on the Saturday following Labor Day.  The number of games played depends on the age group:

  1. Recreational teams U11 and above play a 10 game season with the last game of the season typically played on the Saturday before the Thanksgiving holiday.  The season could extend into December if there are "byes" in the schedule.
  2. The recreational fall season for U7 through U10 teams runs for 10 weeks with the last game played just prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.  The number of games a team will play is determined by the number of teams in a 'division' and the opportunity for a bye weekend is possible.
  3. The recreational fall season for U7 and below teams runs for 8 weeks with the last game played in early November.  As with U7-U10 teams, the number of games a team will play is determined by the number of teams in a 'division'.

Question: How long are the games?

Answer: Games for ages U5-U10 take approximately one hour, but remember to bring your child early to warm up and get ready for the game. Check with your coach as to when he/she would like your player to arrive for games or practice.  Games for U-10 and below are generally scheduled in the morning or early afternoon.

Question: What league age is my child?

Answer: See the League Age Chart.

Question: When do the game schedules come out?

Answer: Typically game schedules come out 7 to 10 days prior to the first regular season game.  Players and teams registering late in SCORE and the other GRJSA clubs can cause delays in finalizing the schedule.  We appreciate your patience!

Question: Will my child play on the same team or for the same coach as last year?

Answer: A lot of effort goes into keeping teams together.  It is the preference of the club to keep kids on the same team as the previous year.  However, the club may move kids from one team to another.  We cannot take requests for teams or coaches.  Returning players tend to have priority, but some consideration is given to players that register early, as this eases the workload on our volunteer registrar.  Typically, new players are placed on a first-registered, first-rostered basis after returning players have been placed.  Returning players not registered before the registration deadline lose their priority status.

Question: Can my child wear jewelry while playing?

Answer: For the safety of the players, Washington Youth Soccer (WYS) forbids the wearing of any jewelry during practices and games. This includes rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, etc. WYS also forbids the use of hair pins, wooden hair beads, hats with hard bills or hats with loose parts.  Medical Alert medals taped to the body are acceptable.
