Referees

SCORE encourages all parents, players (12 years or older), coaches and administrators to become a referee.  For youth players, it is a great way to earn income while learning the rules and nuances of the beautiful game.  For coaches and parents, it provides perspective and insight on the difficulties referees face while enforcing the rules and at the same time ensuring the safety of the players.  Games cannot be played without referees and there is a critical shortage of them in Washington state, so please consider taking a certification class to obtain your referee credentials.  Payment  for games  range from $15 to $45 depending on the age group and the position (center or assistant) you ref on the field, which for a youth is a good income for 90 minutes or less of their time, while also building character, responsibility and leadership along the way.

Laws of the Game

The FIFA laws of the game are modified by GRJSA and WSYSA for younger age groups, hence the name "MOD Soccer" for games played by youth ages U5 through U11.  The GRJSA U5-11 modified rules (revised 9/19/2005) and the FIFA laws of the game, applicable to ages U12 and up, can be accessed from the links below:

U5-U6          U7          U8          U9          U10          U11          U12-U19

These laws of the game and modified rules are current for the 2009-2010 season.

Certification

Entry level referee certification courses, grade 8 or 9, are designed for adults or youth 12 and up and will allow you to referee most U12 games and below and older games depending on experience. The final exam is a written test of which 75% need to be correct answers.  Entry level courses cost no more than $50, but SCORE will reimburse your costs if you referee one or more game for our club.

Trias is our local referee web site; all referees will need to register with the site and obtain a user name and password prior to being assigned to games.  Referees can self-assign themselves to games, pending approval from the assignor, Cindy Moore.  Contact Cindy at crmoore@u.washington.edu if you have problems with registration or self-assignment.  Coaches and team managers should also get acquainted with Trias; the match inquiry section of the web site provides information on the referees assigned to each game.

Existing referees are required to re-certify on an annual basis and any associated costs can also covered by SCORE.  You MUST attend one of three meetings offered - all on a different date/time/week to accommodate everybody - for a FIFA law memorandum update, new WSYSA rules of competition and local association rules of competition updates.  Also included is a review of Trias self-assignment and website operation.

Current Certification Courses

Referee certification courses are offered quite frequently in the Puget Sound area during spring and summer.  Upcoming GRJSA-sponsored clinics at Starfire are shown below.  For a list of other scheduled courses or further information, visit the Trias Soccer Central web site at www.triassoccercentral.org or e-mail Cindy Moore at crmoore@u.washington.edu.  Once you have completed your course, contact our VP of Referees, Troy Holmes at Troy@helixservices.com to get scheduled to referee some games.

There are two types of entry-level clinics, Referee Grade 8 and Grade 9.  The Grade 9 clinic is a recreational, entry-level referee certification course, designed for new referees and can completed in a single day.  The Grade 8 clinic is a more intensive entry-level certification course and can be completed in a weekend.  More details on the two types of clinics can be found below, or visit http://www.triassoccercentral.org/registertraining.
